Intro to Counting and Probability
Single-Session workshop, FREE for members, $10 for non-members. Up to 6 students in grades 4-8.
Friday, May 29, 7:00-8:00 pm
No extensive math background is required – just an active brain. This is meant to be an introductory course to counting and probability. Students will learn creative ways to approach problems that are simple in theory, but complex in reality – such as “how many ways are there to sit Alice and Bob such as that they do not sit next to each other?” “What is the probability of pulling 13 cards of the same suit in a card game?” “Are you expected to win more money if you exchange your envelope?” Students will learn different strategies to “count” possibilities without truly counting them one by one, thinking outside of the box and exercising their mind to grasp the subject that math olympiad coaches have claimed to be one of the “hardest subjects to master”. This will be a fast-paced and slightly challenging course – but don’t let that be discouraging, because anyone who’s willing to learn will get there.
